Cookeville, TN - Merriel Dean Goodwin, affectionately known as Sue, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, at NHC Healthcare in Cookeville, TN, following an extended illness. Born on Oct. 13, 1932, in Cookeville, she was a feisty and loving lady.
Sue dedicated 30 years of her life to her career at Carters, Inc. in Crossville, where her hard work and determination made a lasting impact on her colleagues and the community. Her dedication was surpassed only by her devotion to her family, which she considered her proudest accomplishment. Sue's zest for life was apparent in everything she did, from her cherished flower garden bursting with color to the peaceful days spent fishing, a pastime she greatly enjoyed.
In her later years, Sue was cared for by compassionate nurses and caretakers who loved her deeply, an affirmation of the warmth she exuded throughout her life.
As the daughter of Matt and Josephine Sims McKinley, Sue carried the legacy of her parents with grace and pride. She shared 67 beautiful years with her beloved husband, Joe Monroe Goodwin, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Donald "Bud" McKinley, Dave McKinley, Margaret Hitchcock, Nan Fitzgerald, Jimmie Laymance, Fannie Moss, Ida Hunter, and Rena Nabors.
Sue is survived by her two sons, Joe "Steve" (Donna) Goodwin of West Point, GA, and Greg (Tammie) Goodwin of Crossville. Her family also includes her grandchildren Mathew Goodwin, Lane Goodwin, Drew Goodwin, Amanda Goodwin, Jessica Goodwin Miller, and Stephanie Goodwin; her great-grandchildren, Joe Goodwin, Andrew Goodwin, Allison Miller, Jackson Miller, and Lucy Inabinette.
Services are being planned. Interment will be held at Cookeville City Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
