Samuel D. Adkerson|Nov. 30, 2003|Dr. Samuel D. Adkerson, 64, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Nov. 30, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 3 from the chapel of Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon, TN, with interment in Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Dr. Dennis McGuire, Brother Danny Sellars and Brother Gene Burgess served as officiants. While in the Army, Dr. Adkerson was stationed in Fairbanks, AK. After his military service, he became an educator and coach at Wilson County High and also taught in Illinois. Dr. Adkerson became very active in the Church of God ministry and served in many ways: youth and evangelism director in Hawaii for two years, state evangelist in Tennessee for two years, state youth and evangelism director in the southern region of California for two years and the northern region of California for four years. He served as minister of the Pompano Beach Church of God, the Daisy Church of God, the Broadmoor Church of God, as well as other churches, and was a member of the Church of God Board of Insurance. Dr. Adkerson had been retired for the last five years but was an active member of the Church of God State of Tennessee Missions Board. During his career, Dr. Adkerson preached 4,174 services and experiences 17 mission trips to South America. Under his ministry, numerous believers were led to Christ. Survivors include he devoted wife and best friend of 42 years, Evon Sellars Adkerson; special daughter, Courtney; brothers, James O. (Bobbie) Adkerson of Chattanooga and Herman (Margaret) Adkerson of Illinois; sister, Martha Alice Chavez of Murfreesboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James L. and Sara Pauline Hale Adkerson; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Phillips. Active pallbearers were Joe Chavez, Stanley Adkerson, Gary Adkerson, Kent Adkerson, Billy Sellars, Eddie Sellars, Ronnie Sellars, Bobby Thompson and Hayward Phillips. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Hamlet, Robert Christian, Jerry Cox, Sam Youngblood, Carson Langston, Ken Yates, Lonnie Gable and Jerry Feathers. The family has requested that contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 818 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203 in lieu of flowers. Sellars Funeral Home of Lebanon, TN was in charge of the arrangements.
