Kathryn Lorna Flahaven (Kay) Obituary

Wichita, KS - Kathryn (Kay) Lorna Flahaven, 92, passed away Nov. 16, 2025 at the Catholic Care Center, Wichita, KS. She was born Aug. 22, 1933 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of the late Ivan Smith and Lorna Catherine Graeber Smith.

Kay grew up in Aberdeen, SD where she met and married Lyle Flahaven. They lived and worked in various places throughout the Midwest. After retirement in October 1994, they moved to Fairfield Glade and enjoyed many years in this special community. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church was their spiritual home where they led and volunteered with their parish family. Lyle passed away in 2016 and six years later, Kay chose to live near family in Wichita.

Supporting their six children in various activities, they were well-aware when Kay was in the stands; as were the refs, other competitors and the entire spectator section.

She was especially passionate about peace and justice causes, boosted and advocated for voter participation and rights, served as a Hospice volunteer, enjoyed Ladies Club endeavors and was an enthusiastic player in hand and foot with friends in her communities.

She and Lyle inspired their children to share their parents' values of family, career and giving back. She read voraciously, accumulating useful wisdom, and in her last months, engaged with and raised the spirits of her caregivers.

Survivors include sons Michael (Kathi) Flahaven of Denton, TX; Timothy (Holly) Flahaven of St. John's, FL; James (Mollie) Flahaven of South Portland ME; daughters, Stacy Cofer of Wichita, KS; Erin (George) Eissler of Sarasota, FL; Kathryn (Gary) Graber of Sarasota, FL; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She will be interred next to Lyle at St. Francis of Assisi's Columbarium in Spring 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to St. Judes Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
