George edwin Grooms
George Edwin Grooms, 68, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 23, 2019. He was the son of George F. Grooms and June Goldsmith Grooms, both deceased. Ed is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Grooms; brother, Neil Grooms and sister-in-law, Becky Grooms, of Knoxville; two sons, Lance Grooms and Nicholas Grooms; three grandchildren, Dawson Grooms, Brantley Grooms and Taylor Grooms; five step-grandchildren, Alex Austin, Steven Austin, Lauren Austin, Evan Groce and Emma Groce; three great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
Ed graduated from Holston High School and later attended The University of Tennessee. He enlisted with the Air Force in 1973 as an Air Force radar engineer during the Vietnam War (National Distinguished Service Medal, SAER Edwin W. Rawlings). He was honorably discharged as staff sergeant in 1977. Ed spent much of his professional career as a process flow engineer, supporting the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
Due to Air Force communications training, he became an avid ham radio operator, achieving "extra" class certification (SK-K4KK). Ed spent most of his adult life as an active member in the American Contract Bridge League and became a Life Master. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He was a big New Orleans Saints fan and a 40+ year season ticket holder of Tennessee Volunteer football.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 22 from 2-4 p.m. at Rose Mortuary Heritage Room, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, phone: 865-588-8578. In lieu of flowers, please donate to American Diabetes Association in honor of Ed Grooms.
