Gayther Carl Cook Obituary
Grandview, TN - Gayther Carl Cook, age 73, passed away March 11, 2026, at his home in Grandview, TN with his wife, Sharon Hatler Cook, by his side. Gayther was born Nov. 19, 1952, in Monterey, TN, to his parents, Carlton Marcum Cook and Mabel Pierce Cook.
Gayther grew up in the Bakers Crossroads community of Cumberland County. He graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1971. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a security policeman from 1971-1975.
Most of Gayther's working life was spent working with his family, including his dad and brother Jim in the explosives business, as a nationally certified master blaster. He also worked for several years in the security field at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant. He had many wonderful friends from those days. Gayther was one who never met a stranger and could talk to anyone.
He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather and uncle to many lucky family members who loved him and will keep him always in their hearts. They will continue to share their memories and good stories of "Gate" forever.
Throughout his life, he endured a wide array of health challenges, beginning with a broken arm on his first day of school. Over many decades, he fought a series of chronic illnesses. Through it all, he persevered.
We would like to sincerely thank the VA Medical System, Cumberland Medical Center, EMS, U-T Hospital, and Quality Home Health Care for their loving care and support. We appreciate every doctor, nurse, therapist, CNA and member of the housekeeping crews who cared for Gayther. Thank you to all. Your work is so important, and you have impacted our lives immensely over the years.
We would also like to thank the wonderful people at Bilbrey Funeral Home. Thank you, Karen Vaden, for being such a good family friend and a lifeline to us at these times.
Gayther was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hugh and Amanda Pierce; his paternal grandparents; Gayther C. and Nova Marcum Cook; his parents, Carlton Marcum Cook and Mabel Pierce Cook; his brothers Jimmy, Billy, Bobby, Ron, Gary, and an infant brother; his sister, Margaret Ann Cook Tanner; and his son, Jonathan Wesley Cook.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hatler Cook; son, Jeremy Michael Cook; grandsons, Bryce Gregory Cook and Connor Michael Cook; granddaughters, Carleigh D'Ann Cook and Camryn Rebecca Cook; brother-in-law, Ross Tanner; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Sue Cook, Doreen Cook, and Tina Cook; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends, and close neighbors.
