Nov. 11, 1933—Jan. 14, 2013 Mr. Ernest E. Abston, 79, a resident of the Ozone community of Rockwood, passed away Jan. 14, 2013, in the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville. The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. EST at the Evans Mortuary. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. EST from the chapel of Evans Mortuary, with Minister Clarence DeLoach, Minister Kirby Hinds and special speaker Colton Nuckols officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. EST in the Millstone Cemetery, Cumberland County, with military honors by the U.S. Navy. He was born Nov. 11, 1933, in the Westel community of Rockwood, to Paul Hurbert Abston and Eula Mae Lingo Abston. Mr. Abston was the minister of Daysville Church of Christ in Rockwood; had previously served as associate minister of Willow Avenue Church of Christ in Cookeville; and preached the Gospel for more than 57 years. He served on the board of Upper Cumberland Christian Home in Cookeville, and had served as supervisor of the Happy Haven Children’s Home in Cookeville. Mr. Abston was a former school teacher in the Cumberland County School System; was a former deputy sheriff in Cumberland County and Putnam County; and was a former judicial commissioner in Cumberland County. He enjoyed writing poetry and had a book of his poetry published. Mr. Abston was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Seabees. But his favorite job was raising his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Abston, Paul Edward “Eddie” Abston, and Charles Abston. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Faye Abston of Ozone; daughters, Judy Atkinson and husband, C.J., of Ozone, Terri Purdie and husband, Sid, of Athens, TN, Donna Kinnaird and husband, Harold, of Cookeville, Brenda Reed and husband, Bruce, of Cookeville, andSavannah Moss of Ozone; sons, Larry Abston of Athens, TN, Ernie Abston and wife, Sandy, of Decatur, TN; grandchildren, Hank Moss, Shawn Long and husband, Charlie, Randi Abston, Mary Purdie, Caleb Purdie, Tonya Guffey, Trevor Abston, Wendi Mayberry, Ginny Reed, Travis Fox and Shauna Ledbetter and husband, Corey; a host of great-grandchildren; sisters, Dee DeRossett and husband, Dale, of Daysville, Linda Aytes and husband, Cotton, of Daysville, Hazel Lowery of Daysville, and Wilma England and husband, Bill, of Ten Mile, TN; and several nieces and nephews. Trevor Abston, Dakota Moss, Jake Hill, Charlie Long, Caleb Purdie and Derrick Carter will serve as pallbearers. Dylan Henderson, Dalton Moss and Gunnar Moss will serve as honorary pallbearers.
