April 30, 1930―June 12, 2015 William J. Thompson, 85, of Crossville, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away June 12, 2015, at Wharton Nursing Home in Pleasant Hill. Mr. Thompson was born April 30, 1930, in Alamo, TN, and was preceded in death by his parents, James Harvey and Nina Earheart Thompson. He was a long-time member of Brainerd Baptist Church and was married at BBC in 1951. He was retired from TVA and worked for several years for an engineering firm in Atlanta following his retirement from TVA. He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was an ECM operator on a RB-36. He attended Georgia Tech for three years following his graduation from Chattanooga High School in 1948 and graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1958 with a BS in electrical engineering. He worked on his master's degree at UT in Knoxville while working for TVA. He was a member of Chattanooga Engineers Club, a lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers and a life member of Tau Beta Pi. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Kathleen Lovingood Thompson of Crossville; son, Mike Thompson and his wife, Christy, of Crossville; granddaughters, Holly Thompson Skidmore and her husband, Dale, of Knoxville, and Dr. Mary Thompson Hall and her husband, Josh, of Bilbao, Spain; and great-grandchildren, Grey Skidmore and Ella Skidmore of Knoxville. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. EDT at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family has respectfully asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Brainerd Baptist Church Mission Fund, 300 Brookfield Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37411.
