Oct. 8, 1927—Nov. 11, 1927 William L. Silence, 88, of Fairfield Glade, TN, passed away Nov. 11, 2015, at Ft. Sanders Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in Jackson County, IN, near Crothersville, the son of Hollis F. and Margie M. (Cartwright) Silence. On Oct. 10, 1953, in Kempton, IN, he married Nerita Kay Eaton. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Jennifer, Cincinnati, OH, Michael and Mary Anne, Knoxville, TN, and Brian and Dorinda, San Diego, CA; granddaughter, McKinley Jane, the daughter of Michael and Mary Anne. Also surviving are four brothers and three sisters-in-law Allen and Omalee, Kokomo, IN, Robert, Kokomo, IN, Leon and Colette, Tipton, IN, and Cleon and Diane, Hot Springs, AR; and one brother-in-law, Phil Whelchel, Tipton County, IN. His wife, parents, one brother and his sister, Linda, preceded him in death. He was employed for 40 years in the Technology Dept. of Haynes International, Kokomo, IN, a producer of nickel and cobalt-base alloys, and continued an additional five years as a consultant. He was a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, American Standards for Testing Materials, American Society for Metals, and Metals Properties Council. He served on various technical committees of the organizations and authored or co-authored 40 technical papers pertaining to corrosion and wear. He was a retired colonel in the United States Army Reserve with 31 years service. He was a member of the Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church, Austin Lodge No. 128, F&AM, Tipton, IN and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J.,USA, Valley of Chattanooga, TN. Memorial services were held Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service.
