Walter's Story

Walter Ray Hill was born Jan. 27, 1937, in North Carolina. He passed away July 13, 2017, at Cumberland House in Crossville of pulmonary fibrosis at age 80.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and brother-in-law, Ronald T. Besecker.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carol B. Hill of Fairfield Glade; daughter Lisa R. Hill and granddaughter Brittany R. Hill of Covington, GA; step-son Jeff Johnston (Connie) of Nashville; step-daughters Jill Cantrell of Gainesville, GA, and Jennifer Mackie (Jeff) of Hillsdale, MI; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; brothers-in-law Keith Besecker (Karen) of Arcanum, OH, and Ted Besecker (Jane) of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law Diana Besecker of Miami, FL; adopted brother-in-law Manuel Gonzalez of Atlanta, GA; adopted cousins Bob, Gloria, Craig, Patti and Mark Floros of Fairfield Glade; nieces, nephews and cousins in North Carolina; wonderful friends Dick and Becky Smith and Bill and Roberta Wascher of Fairfield Glade, Bob and Betty Smith of Columbus, OH, and Tom and Fran Jasunas of Crossville; and many others who are very much appreciated.
Walt was graduated from Kenly High School in North Carolina, then joined the Air Force for four years, including duty in France. He attended Piedmont College, Georgia State and Roanoke College. He worked at General Motors in NC briefly, then Norfolk Southern Railway in Charlotte, Atlanta and Roanoke as an accountant for 24 years, retiring in 1993 to play golf and tennis in Florida. He moved to Fairfield Glade in 2008 and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Memorial service will be at Westminster Church, 114 Stonehenge Dr., at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations to Westminster Food Basket program would be appreciated. His ashes will be interred at Abbotsville Cemetery in Arcanum, OH, at a later date.
