July 8, 1928—April 22, 2015 Vivian Doris Tinker, 86, died April 22, 2015. Doris was born July 8, 1928, in Victoria, TN, to the late Vivian Hudson Lay and the Rev. William Marshall Lay. She briefly attended Athens College and later worked as a secretary for the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies (ORINS) in Oak Ridge. She married Bill Tinker July 31, 1954, beginning a marriage lasting 60 years. The two began their married life in Southern California and moved in 1965 to Huntsville, AL. In 1969, the family moved to Smyrna, TN, where Doris became deeply engaged with Child Evangelism Fellowship. Retirement followed in 1989 when the couple located to Crossville, allowing deep engagement with Central Baptist Church’s Awana program, children’s church, and quilting ministry. She worked closely with the Tansi Women’s Club and cheered University of Alabama football. Doris is survived by four children, Nancy Tinker Pace of Charleston, SC, John Tinker of Lutz, FL, Cindy Tinker (JD Hancock) of Nashville, and Rob Tinker (Kathrine Pierre Tinker) of Santa Clara, CA. Doris had four grandchildren of whom she was proud and deeply loved. She is survived by Jack, Miles and Catherine Tinker of Lutz, FL. She was predeceased by grandson Michael Barnes of Nashville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Caring Hearts Fund or to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Middle Tennessee. Visitation and funeral services were held April 27 in Nashville. Interment was at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
