Ronald "Pappy"'s Story
Ronald "Pappy" Cole Abner, 81, of Crossville, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 9, 2017.
He was born Monday, May 6, 1935, in Lawrenceburg, TN, son of the late Stacy Abner and Ruby (Reeves) Abner.
Pappy was a welding instructor at the TN College of Applied Technology for 30 years. He was considered a master welder from the military and was an expert in metallurgy.
During the new student orientation of each class, he would proudly tell that his name and profession both came from the Bible. In the book of 1 Samuel 14:50 Abner was the captain of King Saul's armies, and in the book of Genesis 4:22, Tubal-cain was an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron.
Pappy was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. That was where he received his nickname, Pappy. While he didn't care for it in the beginning, it was a name he grew to love. He was also a member of the American Legion 163, The Veterans of Foreign Wars 9686, and the American Welding Society.
Although he had many achievements throughout his life, he considered his family his greatest achievement. And his friends became family that he picked up along the way. He was a devoted and loving husband and father and did all he could to provide for and guide his family.
Being of the Baptist faith, Pappy said he knew that the greatest gift he ever received was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and he loved to tell others about that gift, and how they too could receive the same gift. And that would be his greatest wish for all here today, that each of you would come to know his Savior!
Pappy is survived by his wife, Nova Myers Abner, Crossville; sons, Ron (Patricia) Abner (Crossville), John Abner (Crossville) and Brian (Paula) Abner, Monterey; daughter, Angela Abner, Crossville; grandchildren, Jeremy (Jennifer) Abner (Lenoir City), Becky (Jamie) Krontz (Saint Stephen, SC), Stacy Abner (Crossville) and Micah Abner, Monterey; great-grandchildren, Kaylynn, Ella and Lily Abner (Lenoir City) and Breayn Abner, (Saint Stephens, SC); and brothers, Ray Abner, Ten Mile, TN) and Jim Abner, Nashville.
In addition to his parents, Pappy was preceded in death by his brother, Stacy Abner, Jr.
