Robert's Story

Dec. 22, 2015 Robert James Hammond Sr., 97, of Painted Post, NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Corning Hospital, under Hospice care on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015. Mr. Hammond was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. He graduated from both Cooper Union and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute before working as a petroleum engineer for many decades. His work took him to Venezuela, India, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and many other countries.  In his later years he resided in Vermont, Florida, Tennessee and Corning. Mr. Hammond was married for 71 years to his beloved wife, Elizabeth, who predeceased him in 2013. Together they had four children, Carolyn Young (Bruce), Robert (Eileen), Dale Dollahite (Bert) and a fourth child, Barbara, who died in infancy. Together they enjoyed eight grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter’s Funeral Home, 14 East Pulteney St., Corning, NY, on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, starting at 12:30 p.m. A celebration of Roberts’s life will begin there at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 or the Salvation Army Citadel, 32 East Denison Parkway, Corning, NY 14830.
