Richard L. Hein, 78, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 9, 2016. He was born June 23, 1938, in Watertown, WI, son of Everett and Ruth Hein. He was a high school athlete in football and basketball, as well as a fine student. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1960 with a math major. He was hired immediately by United Aircraft to help develop a compiler in their Computational Laboratory in Boston, MA. In 1961 he was hired by Honeywell and retired from Honeywell in 1992. During his employment with Honeywell he spent many years in Tokyo, 1967-'83 working with NEC, then in Hong Kong, 1983-'84 as Vice President of Sales, Asia, then eight years in Australia as a Honeywell consultant to Australia Telecom (1984-'92). While in Tokyo he served twice as Grand Master of the Sinim Masonic Lodge. After his retirement, he remained for two more years in Australia as a private consultant to Australia Telecom. He then returned to the US, bought an SUV, new golf clubs and camping gear and began traveling the US to see where he would retire. He finally decided on Fairfield Glade, with the help of brother Don, and moved here in 1996.
He was an avid golfer, cook, world traveler, epicurean and a great listener. He loved well and laughed a lot. The world was his playground and office. After marrying Karen in 1998, they traveled the world on excursions only he could devise. They spent many weeks sight-seeing in England (long-boating), Scotland and Wales (golfing), Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Puerto Vallarta, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore and drove thousands of miles in the US gourmet camping mixed with five star hotel stays. Almost always with golf clubs and canoe. In the early years, he served the FG Fire Dept. and worked as a ranger at Stonehenge Golf Club. He was an active member of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. He golfed in men's golf groups for some years and later in the Sunday Drivers couples group.
Richard is survived by his wife, Karen; stepson, Todd; brothers, Don (Donna) Hein of Brentwood, TN, and Bruce (Adele) of Lexington, TN; and stepsister, Susan Miller of Ely, MN. There are many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life/memorial service will be held at FG United Methodist Church, Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully asked that donations be made in Richards name to Hospice of Cumberland County, 30 East Adams St., Crossville, TN 38555 or FG Methodist Church, Missions, 231 Westchester Dr., Fairfield Glade, TN 38558.
