Rev. James's Story
Rev. James Edward Flatt, son of the late Andrew and Effie Flatt, was the only surviving child. Two siblings died in infancy. Rev. Flatt was also preceded in death by wife, Dolores Pippin Flatt. He is survived by devoted friend and caretaker, Dr. Henry A. Moses; friends, Rev. and Mrs. Arden Schlessinger and daughter, Laura; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Blaylock; Ms. Ann McNair; Mr. John Zrioka; Mr. and Mrs. Edsel Lewis; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Joiner; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bergeron; Dr. and Mrs. Albert G. Berry; Dr. and Mrs. Bernard Ray; Dr. and Mrs. Garry Speight; Ms. Kathy White; a host of cousins; members of the Dorton and Blakemore United Methodist Churches; and other friends. Rev. Flatt served the United Methodist Church for 47 years, often delivering sermons each Sunday to five different congregations in the Cumberland Tennessee District. He also served congregations of Thompson Station and Burwood United Methodist Churches in the Nashville-Franklin District of the Tennessee Conference. For ten years, he was associate director of Pastoral Care at McKendree Village in Nashville. Before his retirement, he was a sales associate at the Cokesbury Bookstore in Nashville. Rev. Flatt attended Bryan College and Tennessee Technology University and earned his bachelor’s degree at Tech. He did further study at the Chander School of Theology at Emory University. In addition to his career as a minister, Rev. Flatt was a teacher in the Cumberland County School District for several years. He won numerous awards for excellence as a teacher. In 2006, he was recognized by the Crossville Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons for 50 years of faithful service to the Lodge. Rev. Flatt served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in the Philippines, Lubbock, TX, and Korea and was honorably discharged. In his later years, he frequently attributed his lingering leg problems to the long marches that his unit made while in Korea (over 50 miles each way). Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 9, from noon to 2:45 p.m., with a graveside service conducted by the Rev. Garry Speight at 3 p.m. A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at Blakemore United Methodist Church, 3601 West End Avenue, Nashville.
