Mona's Story

March 15, 1936—Feb. 5, 2015 Mona R. Carmack, 78, passed away Feb. 5, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with complications from COPD. Born in Lawton, WV, on March 15, 1936, she resided in Michigan from the mid-'50s to 1972 when she made Crossville her home. She was an avid sports fan for the Detroit Tigers, the Tennessee Volunteers and other college and professional football teams. She stayed current with the times by learning to use computers, cellphones and social media. Before retirement, she was a long-time employee for Shoney's of Crossville. She worked and lived her life to do for others, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was a mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed and forever in their hearts. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Graydon and Bertha Dummitt Smales; husband, William Carmack; twin brother, Joseph Smales; and brothers, Fred Smales and Graydon Smales Love. She is survived by her sisters, Joan Jared of St. Petersbug, FL, and Bertha Carol Turner of Michigan; daughters, Debbie Milliken of St. Petersburg, FL, and Gayle Caruthers and son-in-law, David Caruthers, of Knoxville; son, Billie Carmack of Crossville; grandchildren, Shannon Johnson and Davi Caruthers of Knoxville, Lindsay and Michael Milliken of St. Petersburg, FL, Billy Joe and Britney Carmack of Crossville, Haleigh Shadden of Wartburg and Kayla Griffin of Cookeville; five great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and many more family and friends. Graveside funeral service will be held in the spring at Huse Memorial Park Cemetery in Fayetteville, WV.
