Jonathan's Story

Text size

Dec. 19, 1930 Jonathan McIntosh Penney went to meet the Lord quite unexpectedly after having back surgery. Jonathan was born to Jonathan and Gladys Penney on Dec. 19, 1930, in Kingston, NY. He was an only child and was loved by all, including his many aunts and uncles. After graduating high school Jonathan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean war on the USS Leyte. He was very proud of being a Korean war veteran and was thrilled to be able to be among those chosen to fly to Washington, DC to view the Korean war memorial. After returning to the states Jonathan had a career in IBM until his retirement in 1997. He also served as a sergeant with the town of Fishkill police department for 25 years, a job he loved. Jonathan was a coach for CYO basketball and for IBM baseball. He was a caring coach who was loved by his players. He was also a fierce competitor. Jonathan was a member of the Federation of Police, Tennessee Sheriff’s Association, the NRA, the American Legion and the Korean War Veterans Association. He was honored in 2003 as Humanitarian of the Year, here in Crossville. Jonathan ran the food pantry in Crossville for over 10 years – he was always giving and/or taking care of those less fortunate than he. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elinor; his daughter, Susan, and her partner, Patrick Gallagher; his son, Brian and wife Irene; and his son, Mark, and wife Pat. Jonathan was also blessed to have many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills church. In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to their church, Shepherd of the Hills. Hood Funeral Home and Crematory, LLC (www.hoodfuneralhome.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
