Herbert Charles Wenk, 93, passed away peacefully from heart failure on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Herb had just recently become a resident of Cumberland Ridge Assisted Living. He was born to Henry and Ellen Wenk on Aug. 25, 1923, and was the eldest of three children of that union.
He lived the majority of his life in Ann Arbor, MI. Herb graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1941 and joined the Army in 1942. He served in the First Armored Division, also known as "Old Ironsides." His service during WWII took him from Northern Africa to Italy and up through Germany after the war was over. After WWII, he returned to Ford Motor Co. and worked there for 44 years all at the Ypsilanti plant facility.
Herb married Jacqueline Harner on March 13, 1948, and from that marriage is survived by his three children: Susan (David) Moore, Steven Wenk and Jennifer Bills. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bryant, Devyn, Tucker, Samantha and Sawyer. Jacqueline passed away in August 1965 and two years later Herb married Eleanor Singler and is survived by his stepchildren, Sandra Gendjar and Jay Singler, and Sandra's children, Scott (Roni), Michael (Amy) and Maghan (Bryan). He is also survived by his sister Corinne, half-brothers Richard and Roger, sister-in-law Mary Lou and many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn; half-brothers, Harold, Walter, Carl and Donald; and half-sisters, Geraldine and Karen.
Herb was an avid golfer and belonged to the Ann Arbor Country Club for many years. When he retired, Herb and his wife Eleanor moved to Fairfield Glade, TN, along with many other club members who relocated there and enjoyed being able to golf almost year-round. After his second wife Eleanor passed away in 1991, Herb continued to enjoy his years of retirement with Thelma (Pat) Hopkins. Pat passed away earlier this year.
Herb was a good man of few words and was a rock to his family. He worked hard all of his life to support them and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was much loved and respected and they will greatly miss his presence in their lives. A special thank you to the staff at Cumberland Ridge Assisted Living for their loving care and support for the last few months of Herb's life. A small graveside service for his immediate family will be held at a later date in Ann Arbor. Condolences can be sent to Steven Wenk, 2637 Redding Rd., Atlanta, GA 30319.
