Gerda Magdalena (Helbig) Humphries passed away on April 6, 2017, in Crossville, TN.
Gerda was born in Breslau, Germany, on March 10, 1936. She immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1950, spending two weeks on Ellis Island after arriving in New York aboard the Queen Mary. She became a naturalized citizen in 1958.
In 1960, she married Harold Humphries in Huntington, WV. During their 57 years of marriage, Gerda and Harold raised two children and lived in Huntington, in Baltimore, MD; in Jacksonville, FL; in Chattanooga, TN; and in Crossville, TN.
Gerda was preceded in death by her father and mother, Walter and Gertrud Helbig.
She is survived by her faithful husband and caregiver, Harold Humphries; son, David (Julie) Humphries; daughter, Karen (Dave) Porter; five beloved grandchildren, Matthew (Jillian) Porter, Rebecca Porter, Hannah Porter, Daniel Porter and Leah Porter; and two precious great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Christ Lutheran Church, 481 Snead Drive, Fairfield Glade, on Monday, April 10, at 1 p.m.
