March 16, 1919—May 15, 2015 Garland Virgil Brown, 99, passed away May 15, 2015. He was born March 16, 1916, in Burke, TN, to William C. and Docia (Hale) Brown. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by wife, Mary Elizabeth (Simpson) Brown; grandson, James Fitzgerald Brown; granddaughter, Mary Roseanna Monday Elmore; brothers, Leslie Brown and Sandford Brown; and sisters, Martha Anderson, Thelma Woody and infant sister Annie Lee Brown. He was a great-great grandson of Greenberry Wilson. His great-grandfather was Jesse Franklin Brown and grandfather, Jesse Walker Brown. Survivors include his children, James A. (Alice) Brown, Margaret Ann Rector, Brenda Joyce (Jerry) Monday and Myrtle Taylor; five grandchildren, Beth Brown, Melanie Gray, Edwin Rector, Melissa Beaty and Natalie Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Garland was a member of the Crossville Main Street Church of Christ where was an elder for many years. Garland served as Cumberland County Property Assessor for two terms. Also, he was elected to the Cumberland County Commission. He, along with his brother, Sandford, were in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) beginning in August, 1935-1939 in Cleveland, TN. Services were held at Bilbrey Funeral Home May 19, with interment at Green Acres. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. (www.bilbreyfh.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
