Evelyn's Story

March 30, 1929—Feb. 5, 2016 On Feb. 5, 2016, Evelyn Rose Wakefield, 86, made a spiritual journey back to her roots in Mayland, TN, where she was born on March 30, 1929, to Martha Hazel and James Dewitt Cooper. Her life journey is remembered by her son, Donald Scott Wakefield Of Monterey, TN; daughter, Dale Wakefield Roberts (Jamie) of Watkinsville, GA; grandchildren, Jaclyn and Jenna Wakefield, Jamie Roberts (Tonja) and Justin Roberts (Jessica); great grandchildren, Holly and Riley Roberts, Turner and Eliza Jane Roberts. Evelyn graduated from Pleasant Hill Academy in 1946, and went on to pursue a degree at Tennessee Technological University in accounting. She became a state auditor of nursing homes and was well respected in her field. She was an active member of the Democratic Woman’s Club and was avidly interested in politics. She worked as a campaign assistant for Senator Anna Belle Clement O’Brien, traveling extensively. The two were not only neighbors at Lake Tansi but close friends. Evelyn was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend to many. She cherished the good times and always wanted the whole family together at one time, no matter the space limitations. Her passions were the news, cats, pottery, antiques and heirlooms. She was also one of the best cooks in the Upper Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Mayland Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 214, Crossville, TN 38557. Her wishes of cremation have been honored. A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be announced at a later date. D.M. Goff Funeral Home, Inc. of Monterey, TN, was in charge of arrangements.
