Bruce Edward Betz, 84, of Fairfield Glade, TN, peacefully passed away Saturday, June 4, 2016, at his home with his family at his side. He and his wife, Phyllis, formerly of Orlando, FL, have been residents of Fairfield Glade for the past 13 years. He was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Johnstown, PA, son of the late Bruce Franklin Betz and Ethel (Vargo) Betz.
Bruce proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the aircraft carrier USS Princeton CV-37. After the service, he attended Penn State University before starting his career with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA. Bruce retired from Qwip Systems in Orlando, FL, which is where he met Phyllis.
Bruce was an avid golfer and when he wasn't on the golf course or traveling with his wife, he loved building model airplanes and furniture in his shop. Reading and working crossword puzzles were his passion and playing competitive board games with friends and family made him happiest.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Phyllis Huguenot Betz of Fairfield Glade, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Michael Betz and Maureen Betz of Plano, TX; daughter, Cynthia Louise "Cidney" Kent of Center Hill, FL; and brother and sister-in-law, Dennis Michael Betz and Pamela Betz, of Atlanta, GA.
His parents and his brother, David F. Betz, preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, 231 Westchester Dr., Fairfield Glade on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jay Archer officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date in East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
