Betty Miles Ivey, 89, was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Paragould, AR, to Raymond and Molly Nesbit Miles. She passed away at Cookeville Regional Medical Center on Aug. 10, 2016.
Betty grew up in various towns along the Mississippi River as her father was a machinist with the railroad. She was known in high school as a star basketball player. She became an RN at UT School of Nursing in Memphis, TN. She served as head nurse on the neurosurgery ward at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis. There she met her husband, Dr. Donathan Ivey. They were married in Hernando, MS, July 10, 1947.
The couple lived in Knoxville, TN, and Dayton, OH, until, encouraged by their dear friends, Dr. Paul and Hazel Ervin of Crossville, they came in 1953 to Crossville where they lived out their lives.
Betty served as president of the Crossville Medical Auxiliary. She and Don became members of Crossville First United Methodist Church shortly after their arrival and Betty served there as treasurer in the 1960s. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother in the late '50s and '60s, a poll registrar for years at the Library Precinct, and a Cumberland County Playhouse volunteer. She was an avid UT football and basketball fan, especially of Pat Summit's Lady Vols. She was an avid reader, loved traveling with her husband, especially touring historic homes. She was known by family, friends and neighbors for her cooking talents.
Betty was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. The loss of her presence is felt greatly by her family and many, many friends.
