Walter Socha, 92, of Fairfield Glade, TN, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville.
He was born July 4, 1924, in St. Clairsville, OH, son of the late Stanley Socha and Agatha (Lelek) Socha. A true patriot his entire life, he was born on Independence Day and died on Memorial Day.
Walter worked for Cleveland Crane & Engineering Company in Wickliffe, OH, as an assembler. After the closing of Cleveland Crane in 1984, Walter became self-employed with his own taxi service in Middlefield, OH, where he served the Amish Community there for the remainder of his working life.
Walter also proudly served his country in the Navy aboard the USS Pecos in the Pacific theater for the duration of World War II. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with eight stars, Victory Medal, American Arena Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars.
Walter was an active member of the Church of Christ in the Glade, where he was very much loved by everyone there. During his lifetime, he had served the Church as a lay preacher of the gospel for many years. He recently had been presented with a Quilt of Valor during a ceremony at the Church of Christ in the Glade.
Walter is survived by his son, Timothy (Sheena) Socha, Switzerland; daughter, Beverly Hernandez of Fairfield Glade, TN; grandchildren, Adam (Lisa) Socha, Cynthia Hernandez and Jennifer Hernandez; great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Desiree, Meagan, Rachael, Tierra, Brendon, Jodi, Destany, Savannah and Haylee; and great-great grandson, Braxton.
In addition to his parents, Walter waspreceded in death by his wife, Beverly Camille (Norviel) Socha; brothers, Stefan Socha, Benjamin Socha, Ted Socha and Stanley Socha; and sisters, Helen Kaplinski, Stella Wilson and Sophia Burnett.
Funeral services will be held at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home in Middlefield, OH, on Monday, June 5, at 2 p.m., with burial immediately following at Windsor Corners Cemetery in Windsor, OH, where he will be laid beside his beloved wife.
The funeral homes in charge of arrangements are Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. in Tennessee and Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, LLC in Ohio.
