Venus Jefferson "V.J." Dodson

July 27, 1930 - August 02, 2018

Venus Jefferson (V.J.) Dodson, 88, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Aug. 2, 2018. He was born July 27, 1930, in White County, the son of Venus F. and Alla Mae Clouse Dodson. He was educated first in the public school system of Van Buren County and in 1946, at the age of 15, moved with his family to an 80-acre farm in the Pleasant Hill Community, where he then attended Pleasant Hill Academy. He was the oldest of four children and after his father's accident in the log woods V.J. began running the farm. That farm has now grown to well over 1000 acres. He was once the manager of the Pleasant Hill Community Farm that was given to the community by Pleasant Hill Academy.
V.J. was very active in the community, having served on many committees such as County Farm Bureau Board, Farmers Home Administration Board, Soil Conversation Committee, Ag Stabilization Committee and many others. He served for more than 24 years on the County Court, which is now the county commission with most of that time spent as Judge Pro-Tem and chairman of the budget committee. Many huge accomplishments were made during his tenure as he had a progressive attitude combined with a good business sense.
Besides his passion for farming and civic service, he loved to ride horses and hunt both coon and squirrel.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol Dodson of Pleasant Hill, who will remember him always as her soul mate, her best friend and her everything. He was, to her, a one of a kind who every morning would tell her how beautiful she was and that she was his cowgirl, and she would in turn tell him he was her cowboy. Even when he could not speak, he still tried so very hard to tell her.
He is also survived by his sons, Jeff Dodson and his wife, Brenda, and David Dodson and his wife, Kim; daughter, Jan Baker and her husband, Randy; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; stepsons, Ray Brewer and his wife, Tiffany and Stanton Brewer and his wife, Maryanne; step-grandchildren, Brianna, Ronnie, Elizabeth, Kayla, Destiny, Haley, Madison and Emma; sister, Anna Ruth Tucker; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Dodson and Bascom Dodson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, at Hood Funeral Home. Graveside committal services were held Sunday, Aug. 5, at New Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Hood Funeral Home and Crematory, LLC ( was in charge of the arrangements.
