Robert Hunter Watson Sr., 79, of Fairfield Glade, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 18, 2017. He was born Sept. 22, 1937, in Alexandria, VA, son of the late Paul D. Watson and Grace (Hunter) Watson.
After attending American University, Robert joined the Army Reserve. In 1960, he was called to active duty and served as instructor of his Unit. Upon completion of active duty, Robert was hired as a manager in the retail business in Washington, D.C. where he managed departments, opened a new store and was a buyer at multiple retail locations. In 1961, he married Mary Martha Hurd and was married to her until she passed away in 2010.
In 1966, he was selected to appear in the 1966 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. After he left the retail business in 1969, he was internal vice president and entertainment director for the 500-plus member Junior Chamber of Commerce in Washing, D.C. He was then appointed sales manager for three journal newspapers in northern Virginia where he counseled small businesses for the Small Business Administration (a federal agency).
In 1971, Robert was hired by the National Labor Relations Board and sent to Memphis where he initially served as an Investigator. He was promoted to compliance officer, then to compliance supervisor managing a team of investigators, and then to assistant to the regional director until he retired.
He is survived by his second wife, Margaret Ann Stone who he married on July 23, 2011; son, Robert "Rob" Hunter Watson Jr. & wife Janey, Nashville, TN; daughter, Tracy Rhoades & husband Jimmy, Jupiter, FL; grandson, Robert Hunter Watson III, Nashville, TN; granddaughter, Savannah Grace Rhoades, Jupiter, FL; and step-children, Tammy, Tracy, Johnny Jr. and Tim. He is also survived by six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Fairfield Glade on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Leonard Markham officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
