Robert (Bob)'s Story
Robert (Bob) Anthony Citkovic, 74, of Fairfield Glade, TN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, after a brief illness.
Bob was dedicated to serving both his country and community and took great pride in giving his time and expertise wherever and whenever it was needed. Born June 3, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Joseph Citkovic and the late Vivian (Carbone) Citkovic, Bob graduated from Lynbrook (NY) high school in 1961, and shortly thereafter proudly became a member of the United States Army, serving the majority of his term in Vietnam.
Returning to Lynbrook, NY after an honorable discharge from the military, Bob was recognized for his "electronic genius" by IBM, where he ultimately spent the next 30 years impressing the company's clients as a 'Customer Engineer' and helping to further IBM's position in the technology sector. During that time, Bob was also a courageous volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Lynbrook Rescue Squad. He ultimately became the Chief of the Lynbrook (NY) Fire Department (1985-1986).
In 2003, Bob retired and looking for the good life of sunny days filled with golf and relaxation, Bob and his wife, Jean (Hofmann) Citkovic, moved to Fairfield Glade. But lazy days were not exactly in store for Bob. As was his penchant, he quickly became involved in the community, and soon found himself the chief of the Fairfield Glade Volunteer Fire Department. Bob Citkovic was also a former president and board member of the Fairfield Glade Community Club, chairman of the Good Samaritan Society Advisory Board and a member of the Fairfield Glade Rotary Club.
In addition to his love of golf, Bob was an avid football fan, an astronomy aficionado and happily checked off his bucket list of visiting all seven continents and fifty states.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jean Citkovic, Fairfield Glade; son, Robert (Amanda) Citkovic of Grand Junction, CO; daughter, Carol (Dan) Best of Lafayette, CA; grandchildren, Darcy Best, Penelope Best and Alyssa Best; brother, James (Gaye) Citkovic of New York, NY; and sister, Margaret Citkovic of New York, NY.
A Funeral Mass with full military honors will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Glade on Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. with Father Dustin Collins officiating. The honor of interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Bob's honor be made to the Lynbrook Volunteer Fire Department Engine Company #1, Lynbrook, NY or the Fairfield Glade Volunteer Fire Department in Bob's adopted town of Fairfield Glade.
Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. (www.bilbreyfh.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
