Richard Lawrence Bechtel, 86, of Crossville, passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at the Life Care Center in Crossville. He was born June 24, 1931 in Detroit, MI, son of the late Victor Bechtel and Mary Ester (Bingeman) McCann.
Richard was in the Navy during the Korean War and proudly served his country as an aviation technician on two aircraft carriers, the USS Princeton and the Yorktown. After the service, Richard attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and received his PhD in electrical engineering and computer science in 1970. He worked as a research scientist for the NASA Electronics Research Center in Cambridge, MA, for four years where he received a citation for his work on the Apollo program. He also worked at Fairchild Semiconductors for nine years and several other high tech companies in Silicon Valley specializing in integrated circuit manufacturing. In 1999, he retired from Hal Computer Systems which had been purchased by Fujitsu. Richard was also a private pilot and an aviation enthusiast. In 2006, after both he and his wife had retired, they moved to Fairfield Glade, TN, where he was a member of Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol Marie; son, Richard Dale; daughter-in-law, Dori Ann; and granddaughters, Rachael, Anna and Sarah of Elkhorn, WI. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Dale; sister-in-law, Vera Katherine; and step-father, Malcomb McCann.
Memorial services will be held at Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Robert McTurnal officiating. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church Building Fund.
