Rev. Bobby's Story
The Reverend Bobby H. Bowen, of Crossville, passed away at home early on Oct. 5, 2017, with his wife of 44 years, Shirley Overstreet Bowen, close by.
Rev. Bowen, 85, was a retired Assemblies of God minister. He last served Trinity Tabernacle in Crossville, where he was the founding pastor. Previously, Rev. Bowen was founding pastor at Calvary Temple in Crossville, and for a brief period was interim pastor at Homestead Methodist Church. Rev. Bowen ministered in Arkansas, Texas and Memphis early in his career. For several years, Rev. Bowen periodically traveled the country teaching Bible prophesy. Many locals will recall Rev. Bowen's leadership in bringing the James Robison Crusade to Crossville in the mid-1970s.
For several years, Rev. Bowen was general manager of Lake Tansi Village as that resort grew in size and popularity.
Rev. Bowen graduated from Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachie, Texas. He was an enthusiastic fan and friend of the University of Tennessee Volunteers athletic teams.
Rev. Bowen was born July 7, 1932 in Scottsville, AR, to Rev. Jess and Pearl Bowen. His living siblings are Mildred Churchill, Camden, Arkansas; Wanda Farmer, Phoenix, Arizona; and Leonard Bowen, Sheridan, Arkansas. Siblings passing prior to Rev. Bowen are James Bowen, Margaret Sebren and Okla Faye Burris.
In addition to his wife Shirley, Rev. Bowen is survived by four daughters, all of Houston, Texas: Debbie Burnett (Jay), Julie Harris (Royce), Brenda Bowen and Robin Halling (Mark); and stepson Jack Atkins (Sylvia), of Mary Esther, Florida.
He is pre-deceased by stepdaughter Kathy Atkins Phelps. Rev. Bowen leaves 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends to cherish his memory.
Family received friends on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Trinity Tabernacle Church, 2028 S. Main Street, Crossville. The funeral was held at Trinity Tabernacle Monday, Oct. 9, followed immediately by a graveside service in Green Acres Cemetery. Pastors Terry Allen and Andrew Wharton, former associates of Rev. Bowen, planned the services.
