Mitchell Ray Carey Sr., 94, of Crossville, passed away Friday, June 8, 2018, at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville.
He was born June 8, 1924, in Claiborne County, TN, son of the late David Mitchell Carey and Rachel Ann (Fortner) Carey.
Ray married Ida Ree (Mayton) Carey on March 25, 1943, and they were married for 67 years until her passing on May 10, 2010. Out of this union, they were blessed with five surviving children: Patricia Ann Swallows, Billie Jean McCoy, Mitchell Ray Carey Jr. (Melanie), Richard Dee Carey (Anita) and Darlene Cox. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Bill Mayton.
After serving his country in the Army during World War II, Ray worked as a foreman for the Crossville Rubber Plant. He was a farmer and member of the Antique Tractor Club and attended Fredonia Baptist Church. He also had a grist mill he loved. He was a great husband, brother, father, grandfather of 12, great-grandfather of 30 and great-great-grandfather of nine, all who adored him. He also had great friends and neighbors. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In addition to his wife and parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brothers, Clay Carey and Carl Carey; and sisters, Bena May Cline and Eupal Cline.
Funeral services were held at Bilbrey Funeral Home on Monday, June 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. with Bro. Joe Young officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memory Gardens with full military honors.
Pallbearers were Ray McCoy, Ricky McCoy, Josh Potter, Caleb McAfee, Lucas McAfee and CJ. Lauderdale. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Bailey, Clark Cohee, Gary Hicks, Frank Miller, Jesse Rudd and Bill Mayton.
