Milene's Story

Milene Audrey Sower, 77, of Winston-Salem, NC, formerly of Crossville TN, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017. Milene was born on Oct. 14, 1939, in La Crosse, WI, the daughter of the late Miles and Dorothea Morrison.
She grew up in Superior and graduated from Central High School In 1957. She went on to graduate from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, where she earned a degree in nursing. She married Don Megel in 1961 and moved to the Quad Cities, IL. She worked at Moline Public Hospital as a staff nurse then as director of the nursing program before moving to Columbia, SC, in 1979 to became acting dean of the College of Nursing at USC. It was during this time that she earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Iowa.
She later transferred to Myrtle Beach, SC, where she became the Dean for the College of Nursing at USC-Coastal Carolina from 1982-'87. In 1987 Milene accepted the position of executive secretary to the NY State Board for Nursing and executive secretary to the NY State Board for Respiratory Therapists until her retirement in 2001 after 15 years. Milene also achieved many certifications in alternative therapy, becoming an energy healer and practicing for more than 20 years.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband, James Sower of Crossville; and her two daughters, Karlene Sheesley (Bob) of Winston Salem, NC, and Paula Roach (Ronald) of Lumberton, NC. She also leaves her grandchildren, Jason Mrosko, Kristin Utley, Ashlynn Utley, Brooke Utley, Megan Roach and Anna Roach; great grandchildren, Dylon and Elisabeth Mrosko; sister, Patricia Anderson of Duluth, MN; half brother, Rick Morrison (Claire); step mother, Grace Morrison; nieces, Kelly Thompson (Jason Erickson) and Trisha Kallinan (Jeff); and several great nieces, cousins and nephews.
Services are Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at Unity Church of Winston-Salem, NC, at 3 p.m. where Milene was a member and chaplain.
Blessed are those who die in the Lord.
