Mary Evelyn (Smith) Secrist passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 2, 2017. She was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Bradenton, FL, to Willis and Ruby Delores (Regan) Smith. Orphaned at age nine, Evelyn was raised by her aunt, Mary Alice Field, and her husband, Louis, in Kannapolis, NC.
Evelyn played violin in her high school orchestra. She earned a bachelor's in home economics from Asbury University, Wilmore, KY. Evelyn was destined by alphabet to sit next to Robert Bernard Secrist during chapel; they were married on graduation day, 1952.
Evelyn taught elementary school in Maryland, where Robert enrolled in seminary, and in Addison, MI, during most of Robert's 45 years in the Detroit Conference, United Methodist Church.
Retiring to Fairfield Glade, Evelyn became an officer in the Garden Club and Ladies Club and vice president of the volunteer auxiliary at Cumberland Medical Center.
Evelyn was a loving mother of three daughters, Lisa Lukens, Tamara Sheeran and Dawn Smith ("Ltd."); and grandmother of five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and immediate family, she is survived by cousin-turned-sister, Mary Carolyn Field.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Fairfield Glade Methodist Church.
