Jesse Edward Smith, 89, of Crossville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at Cumberland House.
He was born April 13, 1928, in Crab Orchard, TN, son of George W. Smith and Juanita (Winningham) Smith.
During a career in construction, Jesse was literally a builder of the community, with evidence of his work still visible in several local and area buildings. He always enjoyed his work, retiring at the age of 75 from TAP publishing.
Someone once questioned him as to how he could "boss" people as a construction foreman, because he was so gentle. "I didn't boss, I worked beside them," was his reply. His outstanding work ethic was just part of who he was and a trait he passed on to his children.
He was a beloved husband, cherished dad and loving papa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by Margie Lee Hassler Smith, his wife of 68 years of Crossville; daughters, Cathy Cathey of Crossville, Debi (Eric) Goforth of Virginia and Kim (Bryan) McFarland of Kentucky; son, Bart Smith of Crossville; sisters, Ann Calahan of Crossville and Janice (Lynn) Cobb of Rockwood. He is also survived by four granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Smith; sister, Joyce Hughes; daughter-in-law, Samantha Smith; and brother-in-law, Jim Calahan.
Funeral services were held at Crossville City Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Eric Goforth officiating. Interment was in Crossville City Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice of Cumberland County.
