Inga's Story

May 3, 1914—March 1, 2015 Inga Roberts of Fairfield Glade was born in New York City May 3, 1914, and passed away from natural causes March 1, 2015. She celebrated her 100th birthday almost one year ago with friends and family, a milestone she had been long looking forward to. Growing up in New York City, she lived many of the experiences we only read about in history books. At her birth, World War I had barely begun in Europe; gas cost 12 cents per gallon; and the minimum wage in America was $5 per day. Often she would tell stories about gas and food rationing during World War II and working on victory gardening. She attended Hunter College in Manhattan, NY, then transferred to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, where she graduated in 1938. With her BA degree in English and education, she enjoyed many years of teaching in Miami, retiring as a business education teacher at Southwest Miami High School in 1969. She was a “war widow,” married to Paul Ropes, a Navy lieutenant commander who served in the Philippines during World War II. She remarried after his death to Ronald “Spike” Roberts and they pursued many shared interests: traveling, and cruising to exotic places and splitting time between their two homes in Florida and Blowing Rock, NC. Inga possessed a very warm and outgoing personality, always approaching the challenges of life with a positive attitude, a wink and a smile. She loved to dance, listen to music and dine out as much as possible in any new and different restaurant. Above all, she loved to sit down and read a good book. She was a pet lover and remembered all of the many beloved Yorkshire Terriers that shared her life. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her youngest daughter, Barbara Pankau of Tampa, FL; and all of her contemporary friends. She is survived by her loving daughter, Lana Carney of Fairfield Glade; her grandchildren, Jonathan Pankau and Emmy Pankau of Tampa, FL; and her two great-grandchildren, Jenavieve and Jeramiah Pankau. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. (www.bilbreyfh.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
