Eddie's Story

Feb. 9, 2016 Eddie R. Baker, 86, passed away Feb. 9, 2016, at Cumberland House Hospice in Crossville. His final resting place will be Oak Lawn Cemetery in Pomona. Mr. Baker was born in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Francis Ray and Lillie Pearl (Eller) Baker, originally from Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Turner Baker; daughters, Beth Ann Lee and Cynthia Kay Butnor of Crossville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, George Cleveland Dooley and Michael Lin Dooley. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Crossville. Mr. Baker moved to Pomona as a young boy and attended Pomona Grade School. He later graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1947. He joined the United States Air Force in 1948 as an enlisted man, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1955 after completion of the Aviation Student Program and he retired as a Captain in 1968 with 20 years of service. He saw duty during the Korean and Vietnam wars and served in both Asia and Europe. After retiring from the military, he worked 10 years in the Los Angeles Air Traffic Control Center at Palmdale, CA. He returned to Crossville in 1978 and worked for 15 years in the United States Postal Service at the Crossville Post Office as a rural mail carrier.
