Dorothy's Story

Text size

Dorothy Joan Rector was born May 14, 1935, in Dandridge, TN, to the late Joe and Trula Brooks. She was lovingly called Gran-Gran by many and was known as Aunt Jodie by her nieces and nephews, but the most precious name was Moma by her children. She lived in and raised her family in Pomona but has lived in the Hebbertsburg community for the past 10 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister and daughter.
Dorothy loved the country and she loved the Lord. She was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church in Dandridge. She worked at Roselon Southern for many years. She was the most loving, caring and thoughtful person, loved by all who knew her. She loved gardening, camping, campfires, traveling, riding through nature in her side by side, going out to eat and her pets. She loved her pets dearly, including her chickens, but most of all she loved her family. She was the matriarch of the family, the one you went to for advice, guidance, a meal, a place to stay, a hug, an "I love you" or a "Don't worry. It will be ok."
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, in the early morning she went to be with the Lord. She will be missed by all who knew her. Heaven must have needed a special angel. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. A service will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at noon. Pastor Tony French (her nephew) will conduct services and special speaker Greg Byram, and anyone wishing to share a special memory may speak. There will be a special singing by her nephew Mark Brooks. Burial will be at Pomona Cemetery.
She is survived and deeply missed by her children, Glenda Kirby (Earl), Marvin Rector, Delores Turner (Ron) and Johnny Rector (Leslie); grandchildren, Sherri, Tammy, Steve, Lori, Jodi, Darrell, Gary, J.D., Cody; numerous nieces and nephews; lifelong friend Mayford French; close friend Joy White; 24 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Trula Brooks; husband, Dempsey Rector; sisters, Viola French and Wanda Brown; brothers, Nathan Brooks and R.V. Brooks; and granddaughters Tabitha Turner and Laci and Leah Kirby.
Pallbearers are her grandsons and great grandsons, Steve Kirby, Darrell Rector, J.D. Rector, Cody Rector, Gary Turner, Tyler Burke, Devyne Templeton and R.J. Fields. Honorary pallbearers are her great great grandchildren Landyn Coleman, Bryor Hearndon, Maggie Joann Coleman, Addisyn Hearndon and Neyland Ireland.
