Clarence's Story

Clarence "Floyd" Hewitt Jr., 83, of Crossville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville.
Floyd was born on Oct. 26, 1933, in Lebanon, OK, to the late Clarence Floyd Hewitt Sr. and Beulah (Rutherford) Hewitt. His early years were spent helping on the family farm in Marshall County, OK, and attending a one-room school house. In 1946, Floyd's family moved to Washington where he graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1952. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in Yakima, WA.
On Nov. 10, 1956, he married Sherry Lindeman in Peotone, IL.
In 1960, he attended Air Force Officer Candidate School and received his commission as an officer. During the Vietnam War, he participated in many missions as navigator of a KC-135 tanker plane. He also spent a year on the ground at Binh Thuy, Vietnam. During his Air Force career, he flew 127 combat missions and was awarded a Bronze Star and five Air Medals. He retired as a captain in 1972.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sherry Hewitt, Crossville; son, Scott Hewitt, Crossville; three daughters, Sheila (Brent) Nimmo, Nashville, TN, Heidi Hewitt, Goodlettsville, TN, and Holly (Jay) Caldwell, Hendersonville, TN; grandson, Jonathan Caldwell; granddaughters, Hannah Caldwell and Elizabeth Caldwell; brother, Travis (Donna) Hewitt, Westminster, CO; sisters, Patricia (Benton) Forrester, Spokane, WA, and Helen Carver, Spokane, WA; and sister-in-law, Laurie (Thomas) Smith, Pinellas Park, FL.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his brother, Willie Hewitt, and sisters, Eula Price and Odessa Jordan.
Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Feb. 11, 2017. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and the service at 11, with the Rev. Andy Aikens officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church piano fund.
